New Professor of Surgery - Eastern Health: Dr Shomik Sengupta

Dr. Shomik Sengupta is a consultant urologist with a uro-oncology subspecialty interest – including open, laparoscopic and robotic cancer surgery. Prior to his appointment to Eastern Health, Shomik was a VMO with the Department of Urology at Austin Health, including as Director of Training & Research from 2012 to 2017. He has also been a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, University of Melbourne since 2014. Shomik undertakes private practice based in Glen Waverley and East Melbourne.



Shomik undertook his urological training through the Victorian Section of the Urological Society of Australia & New Zealand (USANZ) between 2000 & 2004. Subsequently he completed a two-year Uro-Oncology fellowship accredited by the Society of Urologic Oncology at the prestigious Mayo Clinic, USA. Shomik has completed a Masters in Surgery (2002) on “Dose-dependence of the effects of Butyrate on the colonic epithelium and carcinogenesis” and a Doctorate in Medicine (2014) on “Prognostic factors in urological malignancies”, both through the University of Melbourne.

Shomik has had extensive involvement in surgical teaching. He has been on the Victorian subcommittee of the RACS Board of Urology between 2007 and 2016, including as Chair from 2014 to 2016. He has continued to contribute to urological training, as well as surgical teaching through both institutional and RACS activities. Shomik has recently joined the Skills and Education Centre committee of the RACS.

Shomik is currently also the leader of the GU Oncology advisory group within the Urological Society of Australia & New Zealand, with responsibilities for policy guidance, CME development and media commentary.

Shomik’s interest in urologic research particularly includes clinical trials through the Australian and New Zealand Urogenital & Prostate (ANZUP) cancer trials group, where he is a member of the Board and the Scientific Advisory Committee. He also has an interest in surgical ergonomics and human factors in the surgical environment. Shomik has more than 80 original publications to date, and has been an invited speaker at a number of scientific meetings. Shomik was convenor of the ANZUP Annual Scientific Meeting in 2013 and the scientific program director for the USANZ Annual Scientific Meeting in 2017.

In his new role, Shomik’s goals are to develop and implement meaningful clinical research to impact patient outcomes in all surgical disciplines and enhance surgical teaching and training to inspire future generations of surgeons.
