Monash Institute of Medical Engineering (MIME)

The Monash Institute of Medical Engineering (MIME) is able to connect surgeons at hospitals affiliated with Monash University with Monash University engineers.  Our first two years of seed grants are currently being reviewed in terms of their outcomes, impact and future potential for commercialisation. A new round of seed grants will occur in 2018.



Prof Ulrich Steinseifer is moving from Helmholz Institute in Aachen, Germany to join the Department of mechanical Engineering and MIME.  He is a world expert in cardiac device development and will assist our researchers with device development in general and of also in cardiac surgery.  He commences in the third week of September.

Our Chief Operating Officer Dr Heather St John has left MIME and we are in the process of appointing a new COO.  Heather has done great work in helping to establish MIME, building industry engagement and overseeing our seed grant rounds.

We are now connected with the international ‘Spark’ program of Stanford University.  This program provides expert mentoring to selected research teams of engineers and doctors help them achieve commercial outcomes for their medical device development.

The Monash Medical Faculty has recently developed a partnership arrangement with Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).  The two main themes for collaboration are medical engineering and regenerative medicine.  This initially involves joint PhD projects between Monash University (MIME and Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI)) and CUHK.
